I'm not much of a clothes person anyway, and though I'd love to find a great dress for the wedding, it's certainly taking a backseat to other considerations. But if I were so inclined to spend my time on a DIY wedding dress project, I just might think of trying my hand at a dress in the spirit of Alabama Chanin.
I've been a fan of Natalie Chanin ever since Project Alabama, which was getting big press back when I still lived in Birmingham in high school. My love of her work only continued to grow when I received her sewing book for my birthday last year. I am a huge fan of the emphasis on hand crafts and re-use of found fabrics. Call me crazy, but I'm convinced that you could make an Alabama Chanin style dress like this:
With a little creative embroidery and applique work on an American Apparel dress like this:
What do you say, can anything remotely wedding appropriate be created from the work of Dov Charney?
love thus idea. very clever.

If you want to make your wedding dress, make your wedding dress. Buy the best quality materials, give yourselve time and go for it. Natalie's dresses are made from the best quality materials and are extremely expensive. A dress made by your hand to marry your soulmate should be made with love and care. You'll save a fortune anyway. You'll probably need less than three yards of fabric.

Love this idea- I noticed Project Alabama a few years back and fell in love. This is great, it could get fun to consider not only adding material, but cutting it out, adding color? Also- If you are using an american apparel item like listed above be ware of stretch. Your dress might need to stretch ever so slightly to get it on, but your embroidery and added material might resist that and could cause weird pulling... I would look for a dress with very little to no stretch to work off of.
